Are you passionate about software development? Do you dream of working in small, multidisciplinary and self-managed teams? Do you want to make a difference and have a positive impact on the lives of millions of customers? Then the job of Junior Java Software Developer job is for you!
Angèle is a Junior Java Software Developer at BNP Paribas Fortis. After a final-year internship at a start-up, she decided to join the bank in November 2020. A surprising choice? In any case, she doesn't regret it. Here's why.
"I already had a pretty positive image of BNP Paribas Fortis, and it was confirmed," explains this young Frenchwoman who has been living in Belgium for just over a year. "I thought that the leading bank in Belgium couldn't afford to have inferior IT tools. Before applying, I explored Easy Banking Web and the Easy Banking App, knowing that I would probably be working on these platforms. What I saw convinced me, so I joined the BNP Paribas Fortis adventure and I'm not disappointed," Angèle smiles. "Just the size of the IT department alone shows that it's a top priority for BNP Paribas Fortis! Digitalisation is really at the heart of the priorities, and the projects are numerous and varied."
"It's also nice to work in a start-up, of course, but the pressure on your shoulders is enormous," she continues. "And because the structure is small, you're sometimes the only IT specialist. At BNP Paribas Fortis, I have found an environment that encourages personal development and continuous learning. I'm surrounded by many IT colleagues with very different skills and expertise, and they teach me a lot. Plus, the bank also offers a lot of interesting training courses. Despite the special context of the health crisis, I have been very well received – in a large company, yes, but with a human face!"
Another advantage of BNP Paribas Fortis, according to Angèle, is the use of the Agile work methodology. This involves creating small, multidisciplinary teams (developers, testers, but also business people) who are in charge, from start to finish, of a series of applications. Their mission: to make a first version of the product available to the customer as quickly as possible and then evolve it based on customer and user feedback.
"It's a very dynamic way of working that gives each person a lot of responsibility," explains Angèle. "There are ten of us in my 'Squad', with very different profiles, and we work on the basis of two-week sprints. It's fun and efficient!"
It's clear that Angèle loves her job and thrives in it. "The coolest thing is that all the features I develop with my colleagues have a direct impact on the end-user experience: the customer. Since I joined, I've worked on some very interesting projects, such as integrating the new Visa Debit card into all our investment products, or making several applications compliant with the European MiFID 2 directive, which aims to make them more transparent. Honestly, it's a fascinating job!"
