Updating your wardrobe, buying Christmas gifts, subscribing to a streaming platform, booking your next holiday… The internet offers endless possibilities, which require an increasing number of online transactions.
Online shopping is secure and easy thanks to methods that are governed by various regulations.
And a healthy dose of vigilance makes you even safer!
Whether it's your Easy Banking App and its authentication methods, or online payment systems like Apple Pay, find out more about secure payment methods for simplified online shopping.
Technology has evolved, and so have our consumption habits. More and more, we’re shopping, ordering and booking online.
It's fair to wonder whether your payments are secure enough. Online payments and their security are governed by the European Payment Services Directive, or PSD2, which governs payments in European online shops.
When you buy a product or service online with your debit or credit card from a merchant in the European Economic Area, you’re protected by European regulations. These allow for easy online payments, without authentication in some circumstances.
If those circumstances are not met, you will need to prove it's really you. To do this, PSD2 has introduced enhanced authentication, or two-factor authentication.
Depending on the situation, you must identify yourself by using two of the following identification methods:
For non-European websites, and with a few exceptions such as small amounts or monthly subscriptions, the two-factor authentication rule will not apply. You can still pay online with your card number and CVV code (the three-digit code on the back of your debit or credit card).
Always be extremely vigilant in order to avoid online scams. Suspicious sales platforms, social media scammers and second-hand websites: fraudulent practices are everywhere.Discover our tips to protect yourself against fraud and phishing!
You can also pay for your online purchases without entering your bank details. To ensure secure online payments, various online payment systems have been created, examples being PayPal and iTunes.
To use them, you need to create an account separate from your bank account. You can then link the payment platform account to your bank account or top it up using your debit or credit card, benefiting from the security measures put in place by your bank. Payments are then made with a username and password.
In-store or online, you can now pay without even needing to take out your card, either by scanning a QR code or by holding your smartphone (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Payconiq by Bancontact etc.) or your smart watch (Garmin, Fitbit etc.) near the terminal.
And what about security? Confirmation methods like your PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition are usually required. For added security, activate your smartphone's lock system. Your bank details are never sent during these payments.
