Why take out cash insurance?

Every day, you have to handle cash that’s vital for your business. Cash insurance protects it in the event of:

  • theft from your commercial premises or home, or during transportation
  • loss due to fire, flooding or a natural disaster
  • counterfeit banknote fraud

You benefit from extended cover to protect your day-to-day business income.

No excess

You don’t have to pay an excess if you lose cash due to fire, water damage or a natural disaster.

Tax-deductible premiums

The premiums on your Cash insurance policy – which are based on the number of points of sale you have – are tax-deductible as business expenses.

Protection against theft

Banknotes, coins, cheques and other items of value – the full list of which is provided below – are covered if they’re stolen from your business or home.

Protection during transportation

Your items of value are reimbursed if they’re stolen, damaged, destroyed or lost during transportation to the bank as part of your business.

Protection against counterfeit banknotes

Have you discovered a counterfeit banknote when depositing your money at the bank? If so, you can get compensation, so the fraud will have no impact on your income.

Additional protection

You benefit from a higher level of compensation if you lose money due to fire, water damage or a natural disaster.

Who is covered by this insurance?

Cash insurance only concerns self-employed individuals, professionals, small businesses and associations that receive cash. All branches in Belgium must be insured (up to a maximum of 10).

Protection of your cash and all authorised means of payment in Belgium

Extended protection in the following cases
  • Counterfeit banknote fraud: compensation up to €2,239* per year and per establishment

  • Theft from your insured commercial premises:

    • compensation up to €3,921* per establishment if the theft occurs outside business hours
    • compensation up to €11,204* if the theft occurs during business hours
  • Theft from the private part of your commercial premises or at home: compensation up to €3,921*

  • Theft during transportation including violence or threats: compensation up to €11,204*

  • Theft during transportation:

    • between your business premises, your home or your bank
    • between different delivery points
    • during itinerant activities, e.g. at a market
  • Loss due to fire, water damage or a natural disaster: compensation up to €11,204* if the damage occurs during your business hours

Main exclusions

  • If the loss occurs while items are being carried by post

  • Embezzlement involving forgery or false accounting, along with calculation errors

  • If items of value are left unattended in a vehicle or left unsupervised or unprotected in one of your premises or in a public place

The following businesses are excluded
  • Shops open at night, insurance brokers, business specialising in transporting items of value, bookshops, betting shops and bookmakers
